Fireplace Dismantle

For those that may not remember or are just tuning in- I'm not that fond of the fireplace in our new house. These are the reasons:
-It's huge, massive, sticks out very far
-It's totally fake. As in, a bunch a brick surrounding a plywood center with an outlet for a plug-in light-up log set.
-It's ugly. Hate the red brick, hate the mantle, hate, hate, hate.
-Not my style at all.

So my father-in-law came over with a sledge hammer and went to work. This is what it looks like now.

I definitely want a fireplace. Just not this one. I'd love to put in a gas fireplace, but there is no way to vent it since the laundry room is behind this wall. And I watched a video on youtube that talked about how dangerous the vent-less gas fireplaces are for your home. For me, it is more about being able to decorate a mantle and the overall aesthetic of the room. So I went to the greatest source of all- Pinterest! I found some great options. These are some I liked-

I wouldn't mind getting an electric insert so we can enjoy the cozy warmth of a fire, but we will see. The rebuilding of the fireplace will probably be a project for down the road a ways. We have lots on our plate already!

What do you think? Am I silly to want a fake fireplace? Are they worthless or do you understand where I am coming from?

  1. Not silly at all!! I love the idea of building your own faux-fireplace! There is so much you can do with it. I laughed out loud imagining Lanny demo-ing the fireplace. He got 'er done!!

  2. No, you are not silly! Having a fireplace (even just for the visual impact) is super fun! I am looking forward to seeing you decorate whatever you end with in the future. I think the last picture is my favourite. :)
